The Not So Endless Summer

It’s been a really great summer. I haven’t actually done much boating but I’ve really enjoyed seeing others have fun. Here are 3 of the things I enjoyed this summer:

• Newcomers Cruise The intention of this cruise is to help newcomers get used to their boats but actually anyone can join us. Jeff rented a house at Cobb Island that has 2 boat docks behind it. He ran the logisitcs (catering, sound system, helped tie up the boats when they came in, tents for shade, etc.) and was accompanied by his wife Deanna and Laith their little boy. My brother-in-law Alan and First Mate Nancy were lead boat for the cruise and I came by car with my wife Sally and our 6 year old daughter Olivia.

Multicast, Grateful Shark and 1.2.3...GO on the newcomers cruise

Jeff did an awesome job! He got barbecue from a local place for all of us and we ran our mouths all night. Since it was my birthday, we walked over to the Pirate’s Den at the end of the evening for a nightcap. Laith and Olivia got along really well together and a bunch of us crashed in the house!

Thanks to the folks that participated in the cruise: Golden Opportunity, Grateful Shark, 1.2.3...GO, Afternoon Delight, and Multicast. It’s great fun to spend some time with folks away from the marina when we’re actually boating—instead of just talking about it. If you didn’t go on the cruise this year because of prior committments, make sure to save the date next year. It makes for a great boat trip.

• Fresh Crabs After we left on Sunday, Sally and Olivia took me to Captain Billy’s Crabhouse for lunch. Captain Billy’s is one of 3 crabhouses near the 301 bridge at Pope’s Creek. I had softshells (can’t turn them down) and drank just one Backfin. Eating at Pope’s Creek was one of my favorite things to do as a kid and I love to go back whether by car or boat.

Huge boat we saw from Billy’s, on the way to National Harbor no doubt

• Church Outing Jeff and I recently took the middle schoolers from my church out on a tubing trip to Belmont Bay. We took two boats: Our 260 Crownline trade for the tubing and a 275 Bayliner trade to be the mother ship. The kids wanted nothing to do with that mother ship—they tubed for over 3 solid hours!

And that's everything I love about boating—good friends, good conversation, maybe a few drinks (or maybe not) and relaxation for sure, for sure!
