Friendly Advice
Well summer’s finally here and boy is it ever! What a year for hot weather and thunderstorms. My advice to everyone is to get out, get wet and get naked (not particularly in that order).
But seriously, if you know a thunderstorm is coming you need to be at the helm of your boat. There’s two ways to handle a boat in a thunderstorm. You can either find a quiet anchorage, let out more than the usual amount of anchor rope and sit at the helm with the engine(s) running (that way if the anchor breaks loose you still have control over the boat). Or you can stay in the channel, point the boat into the wind, slow down, and ride it out. Either way, stay out of the water and stay away from trees. Lightening strikes are rare—once Sam and I were towing a boat in a thunderstorm and lightning struck so close to the boat behind us we couldn’t hear it! The point is we didn’t get hit.
Also, thunderstorms don’t always run in a full line if they are just individual squalls. If you can determine the direction the squall is going in, you may be able to duck around it.
Newcomer’s Cruise
Our second annual Newcomer’s Cruise is scheduled for July 26–27th. If you are not a newcomer but would like to be a part of the cruise please let us know! Jeff Atwood is providing ground support and I have to work so we could really use a lead boat. Just email me at joe@hoffmasters.com if you have an interest. |

Other Stuff
It’s July and I still haven’t been for a boat ride. Guess that’s just how it goes sometimes—life gets in the way! Oh well, doesn’t really matter, I get great enjoyment from watching all of you get out and sounds as if most of you are having a total blast! The Occoquan Yacht Club has been extremely active and had a Memorial Day Weekend at Colonial Beach. Some of the C pier gang went to Tides. Since then people have been hitting all the hot spots up and down the river. I say great for them! Put the newspapers away and enjoy the day!
