The following are a couple of news items from the trade press that consumers don't get to see. Thought I'd share them with you. The source is Boating Industry Magazine's email list:

Volvo's marine sales up

Sweden
Goteborg

AB Volvo's marine and industrial power system engine sales totaled more than SEK1.6 billion in the third quarter, up about 15 percent over the comparable period last year. For the first nine months of 2000, sales were up 18 percent, to over SEK4.9 billion.

The company reported that the world market for marine engines continued to grow during the third quarter, though "some weakening" in the North American market was detected at the end of the quarter. Orders booked in Europe for recreational craft engines continued to be "very substantial."

"Marine and industrial power systems reports record-high earnings in the first nine months," said Leif Johansson, chief executive officer. "Growth is strong and the business area continues to capture market shares. This is also valid for the North America market, where sales of diesel-powered and gasoline-powered engines for leisure marine craft are increasing sharply, which also helps to improve Volvo Penta's margins."

Order books for recreational craft engines in Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and other markets were described as "well filled." Volvo continues to increase its share of the marine engine market, according to the company.

The Volvo Group reported a net sales increase of 5 percent to SEK30.1 billion in the quarter, with a decrease of 45 percent in operating profits to SEK654 million. The decline was attributed primarily to difficulties with North American truck operations.

The European Union's competition authority approved Volvo's proposed acquisition of the Renault truck business; however, as a concession, Volvo will have to divest its holding in Scania AB within three years. In addition to trucks, Scania manufactures marine engines.

What's happening around the Marina
Well the Annapolis Show was a real trip! The Roamer prototype we brought was packed all the time, and we got 2 deals-one for us and one for another dealer in the northeast, with several more hulls being discussed. Next the boat goes to the Fort Lauderdale Show, where we're sure they'll sell 2 or 3 more-looks like the Roamer is sold out for 2000!

Maintenance
Got the E pier culvert piping done and gravelled about 1/3 of the parking lot and graded the rest. Waiting for approval from the state for the pumpout. When we get done the stand will still be where it is but you'll have a porta potti station and a vacuum pumpout system by spring. We've contracted for refacing of the Hoffmaster's sign so it's not quite as bright during the day and shows better at night. Next we're putting a roof on mom and dad's house.

More BS
A C pier family member told 2 other family members that he heard at Tim's we had sold the place to Prince William and it was a done deal and all the Chris Craft's were going to be kicked out. I don't think this rumor is being generated out of Prince William like it was 2 years ago when I wrote an essay quashing the rumor (the essay, almost 2 years old, is still on this site if you want to read it). Needless to say it's BS-we've got 2 strong lines of boats, have over $500,000 in business already reserved for next year, and we're committing over $10,000 to training for our staff over the winter including for me. We went to Annapolis and are committed to a Chaparral display at Chantilly 1/18 and to displaying Chris Craft and Chaparral at DC 2/21. For those of you who have known me a long time you could have guessed all this but I'm writing to potential customers and newer family members.

A word of explanation to potential customers: when I use the term "family members" I'm not necessarily referring to blood relatives. Our mission statement is as follows:

"Hoffmaster's is a family business. This family consists of our relatives, employees, past employees, stockholders, customers, bankers, lawyers, accountants, insurance agents, government overseers, and suppliers. The proper interaction of this family always has and always will drive the success of Hoffmaster's Marina. When people treat each other well and help each other lead happy lives, a special thing happens that transcends the normal stresses of living. It is this special thing that brings profit and trust together."

When I wrote last month that my sister Cindy had passed on you would not believe the outpouring-how many people came to us with sympathy and understanding. We boat because we want something out of life. We run this business to facilitate that special feeling. Success financially is but one, albeit important, facet in what success really means.

Anyway, off the soapbox for me. I'm going on vacation so I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the season, pay your marina bill, and get your winterization order in to Richard,

Love,

Joe
